Exploring Maryland's Cycling Trails

Discovering Hidden Gems in Western Maryland

As a cyclist, I've had the opportunity to explore many of Maryland's scenic trails and hidden gems. One of my favorite routes is the Western Maryland Rail Trail, which spans 22 miles from Cumberland to Frostburg. The trail takes you through rolling hills, dense forests, and picturesque towns, offering breathtaking views at every turn.

The trail is relatively flat, making it accessible for riders of all skill levels. Additionally, the trail's history as a former railroad bed adds an interesting layer of depth to your ride. You can almost hear the whispers of the past as you pedal along the tracks.

Exploring the Chesapeake Bay Loop

Another must-ride route is the Chesapeake Bay Loop Trail. This 4-mile loop takes you through the scenic waterfront areas and parks along the bay. The trail offers stunning views of the water, as well as opportunities to spot local wildlife like birds and fish.

The trail also passes by several historic sites, including the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Be sure to stop by and learn more about the region's rich maritime history.

Riding the Patuxent Branch Trail

For those looking for a more urban ride, the Patuxent Branch Trail is an excellent option. This 8-mile trail runs from Laurel to Columbia, passing through several parks and natural areas.

The trail offers a unique perspective on the region's history and culture, with many historic sites and landmarks along the way. Be sure to stop by the Patuxent Research Refuge for some stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
